Notes from the ridge

Helen Calder. Thirty-four years married, and a woman who writes the week down so it stays put.

The mountain was gone again

Wooden porch overlooking Blue Ridge mountains in morning fog
Some mornings the ridge is a line. Some mornings it is only weather.

I take the mug to the railing before the house starts. The Blue Ridge does this: it shows up, then it does not. I used to wait for a clear day to come out here. Now I come out anyway.

He is still asleep. The throw is where I left it yesterday. Nothing to report except that the fog held and I stood there long enough to notice.

I took the picture so I would remember a Monday that did not ask me for anything yet. Not a view. Just the hour.

He sat down without announcing it

Two coffee mugs on a small table between two chairs on a wooden porch
Mine is the one that chips. His has been that way for years.

There is a stretch after the coffee and before anyone needs a ride or an answer. Some mornings he comes out. He does not say he is coming. The second mug is just there.

We do not talk much. I used to fill it. Now I know the point is that he sat down. Thirty-four years and I am still learning that.

If you came here looking for advice, this is not that. It is two chairs and a porch in North Carolina. That is the whole note.

The keys were on the counter the whole time

Reading glasses, house keys, and a coffee mug on a kitchen counter
I stood in the kitchen with my hand on the drawer and no idea what I came in for.

This happens more than I tell him. I walk into a room with a job and the job leaves. I stand there with the glasses like they might remind me. Then I find the keys next to the mug I already finished.

Getting older is a trip. I am not shopping for a miracle and I am not writing a memoir about it. I put the keys in the same place because putting them in the same place used to be enough, and some days it still is.

I am leaving this here so the next time I do the standing-in-the-kitchen thing, I can at least laugh on purpose.

About me

I live in Asheville with my husband. When the appointments stopped matching how he felt the next morning, I started keeping notes. I am not a doctor, a coach, or a brand. I write short notes about the week so the week does not blur.

If you found this from my Facebook page, hello. I post the same kind of thing there: the fog, the two mugs, the keys on the counter. No news desk. No clinic. Just a person trying to keep the days straight.
