Weekday Letter Denise Mercer

Notes from the table

The mug was already there

Kitchen table in morning light with a mug and a notebook
Same chair. Same hour. Nothing on the list yet.

I sit down before the house asks me for anything. The notebook is where I left it yesterday. The mug does not move unless I move it. Lexington in September is still warm in the window and cool on the table.

I used to wait for a reason to sit. Now I sit first. The letter is not important. It is how the morning keeps a shape.

I took the picture so I would remember a Monday that did not start with a task. Not a ritual I copied. Just the table.

The house got quieter and I did not fill it

The kids are grown. That sentence used to arrive with a list of things I should start. I did not start them. I write in the same chair and leave the extra rooms alone.

People want a project for the quiet. I am not shopping for one. The week stays put if I write it down. That is enough on a Thursday.

If you came here looking for advice, this is not that. It is a kitchen in Kentucky and a letter that does not have to go anywhere.

About me

I live in Lexington. The house got quieter after the kids left. I write a letter most weekday mornings — nothing important, just so the week stays put.

Not advice. Not a professional anything. If you found this from my Facebook page, hello. I post the same kind of thing there. No clinic. No shop. Just a person keeping the days straight.
